What is Fedora VPS

Fedora Linux is a community operating system project created by Red Hat and a large community of Free and Open Source contributors. Fedora Linux is the bleeding edge operating system, with the newest free software packages and frequent updates. A Fedora VPS, or Fedora VPS Hosting, is a virtual private server that is running Fedora Linux. As root of your VPS you have full control of your VPS, so you can modify it in any way you like.

One of the defining characteristics of Fedora is the early adoption of the latest Linux kernel and other free and open source software (FOSS) released by the upstream projects. Fedora is also very container friendly with tools like Podman and Buildah available natively on the desktop. Many users also use Fedora as the base OS for their development servers and even for their continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD) pipelines because of the very up to date toolchain and the fast pace of package updates in Fedora.

BuyVPS offers KVM virtualization, NVMe storage and a wide variety of operating systems including Fedora. Get started with your Fedora VPS now in Amsterdam and New York.

Comparison

Fedora VPS vs Other Linux VPS

In addition to the other options we list here, Fedora is one of the many Linux distributions that can be installed on your VPS. Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS and Arch Linux are also available. Each has its own pros and cons.

Fedora vs Ubuntu

I recently wrote an article for ZDNet that explored the pluses and minuses of running Fedora Linux as opposed to running Ubuntu. Here is a quick summary of some of the points I covered in the article. Naturally there's more detail in the full article, but here's a brief rundown. Choosing between Fedora and Ubuntu will depend on a number of factors – chief among them being your desired level of stability and the frequency with which you need to have the very latest versions of applications.

Fedora vs Debian

Choosing a version to use as a server base is somewhat a matter of taste. Factors that may be important are for example the conservatism of Debian as opposed to the more rapid development of Fedora. In general, a Debian system is the better choice for a production system which is not updated under dynamic conditions (i.e. where the system does not need to keep pace with a rapidly changing environment); for a web application server where the operating system needs to be updated at the same pace as the applications deployed on it, Fedora may be the better choice.

Fedora vs Rocky Linux

Choose Rocky if you want RHEL compatibility and long term support. Choose Fedora if you want to be running the latest upstream work. Fedora is the upstream of RHEL and moves faster.
