Why host in the EU

One EU datacenter. The interconnection capital of Europe.

We are running a single region EU based company and our datacenter is based in Amsterdam (AMS). Our interconnection is provided by AMS-IX, the largest internet exchange in Europe (measured by the number of member networks). This allows for peering with a huge amount of ISP's, CDNs and content networks. A single hop is enough to connect to most of them.

01

AMS-IX peering depth

900+ networks peered at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). This includes all major EU eyeball networks as well as many major EU CDNs and content networks. All of these networks are interconnected within a single hop from a server hosted in Amsterdam.

02

Sub-15 ms RTT to EU capitals

For many major EU cities (e.g. London, FRA, PAR, BRU, CPH and Nordic cities) the distance to Amsterdam is in the single-digit-to-low-teens ms range.

03

EU data jurisdiction

The operator is based within the EU and the data plane is running within the EU as well. Thus personal data of EU residents is processed within the EU by default and does not automatically get replicated to servers outside of the EU.

04

Renewable-heavy grid

The Dutch grid where our Amsterdam data center is located is primarily powered by wind and solar power. There is also a lot of new storage capacity being added. For Amsterdam data center PUE figures are publicly available and are doing well compared to the rest of the industry.

Network

Multi-homed transit. Public ASN.

Our servers are multi-homed on Tier 1 Internet Service Providers in Amsterdam. On top of that we provide direct peering with European eyeball ISPs and CDNs in the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). Our operator's public ASN is clearly disclosed in the customer portal. In addition to the VPSes features, every VPS includes 1 IPv4 /32 and 1 routed /64 IPv6.

Migration

Switching from another EU host?

We offer the usual European cloud SKUs in three lines of plans: currently vCPU, RAM and storage of your existing server at BuyVPS can be matched with one of the plans of the three lines of plans and a server with the same specifications can be deployed and after switching over to the new server, the old server can be cancelled.

From Hetzner CloudThe servers CPX and CCX (shared and dedicated CPU) correspond to the old vCPU based SKUs (Standard and Dedicated CPU).
From OVHPublic Cloud b2/d2 instances match BuyVPS Standard CPU as well as Dedicated CPU plans.
From ScalewayFrom Scaleway DEV and PRO instances match BuyVPS Standard CPU plans and Dedicated CPU plans correspondingly.
From ContaboThe VPS S/M/L plans from Contabo fit into the same tiers as our standard VPS plans, i.e. there is no overcommit of resources or downgrading to a lower tier as there is with Contabo's medium sized VPS for

Common questions

EU VPS: jurisdiction, IPv4, peering.

Straight to the point. All information needed to choose the right EU region is on this page. If something is missing, the contact directory is just a click away.

Where exactly is the EU VPS hosted?

AMS-IX-adjacent datacenter cluster in the Netherlands (we will provide you with the exact datacenter upon request).

Is the IPv4 RIPE-allocated and EU-geolocated?

The RIPE-allocated IPv4 is geo-located to the Netherlands in MaxMind, IPinfo, ipgeolocation.io and other geo-databases. Should a consumer of this geo-data mis-map a customer's geo-location, we re-submit the entire prefix to the database in question.

What jurisdiction applies to data hosted on an EU VPS?

The VPS and all data hosted on it is hosted within the European Union. The contracting party is a Dutch BV (privately held limited liability company). It is registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce under registration number 98861468.

Is the service GDPR-compliant?

All data of residents of the European Union by default is hosted within the Amsterdam region and thus the Service is GDPR-compliant. A Data Processing Addendum is available for business accounts.

Can I run outbound mail (SMTP) from an EU VPS?

After you confirm the settings for your mail server, we will set up SMTP for you. We open port 25 for our customers who are in good standing with their payments. In our panel you can configure your rDNS. We can also monitor the sender-reputation of your EU IPv4 address for you.

What is the SLA?

99.8% uptime, 100% Stack (compute, storage, network) and service credits according to Terms of Use if not met.

Is DDoS protection included?

No, we scrub volumetric attacks at the edge for you before they hit your VPS. There is no additional charge for DDoS protection, we don't charge by the attack. Application layer protection is your responsibility however.

Workload transfer between EU and US regions.

Yes, as the plans for both regions contain the exact same SKU's and pricing, it is possible to utilize the control plane and operator API to transfer workloads between the regions as needed. Many customers have a primary server in one region and then a hot replica in the other region for failover purposes.

How long does provisioning take?

Under two minutes for stock images such as for the latest Linux distributions. The time it takes to upload a custom ISO to our servers.

Does the price change at renewal?

No. Your introductory rate is your renewal rate. There is no re-introductory rate for you when your plan is up for renewal.

Can I cancel any time?

Yes. Plans can be canceled at any time. These will then be fully prorated to the last day of usage and there will be no termination fee.
