VPS servers are delivered as unmanaged servers with basic monitoring. We then layer on managed services as required to meet your needs.
Basic monitoring
Every VPS ships with basic telemetry so you can see that your server is up and running, at no extra cost.
Advanced monitoring
Go beyond the basic numbers and follow more in-depth key figures, for example the usage of the resources, in order to be able to recognize problems early on.
Uptime checks
External checks (e.g. Nagios) that monitor your services and alert you when a service stops responding.
Managed OS updates
We can also update your operating system for you. We work off each request to ensure changes are what you require them to be.
Proactive support
The Team will assist with parts of this that you don't want to manage yourself but that still need to be managed.
Automated backups
You can choose to have backups done on a schedule, from once a week to every day, and keep them for up to 30 days. This is an extra feature that comes with each plan.

By "Managed" we don't mean a separate product locked down inside a VPS. Instead, the same KVM VPS that you would get as an "Unmanaged" VPS product, is offered with additional services on top of it. Therefore, you could start off with a completely "Unmanaged" VPS and then as required add on managed services to it. Similarly, you could start off with a completely "Managed" VPS and then as required remove services from it.

Adding managed services does not change the machine underneath. You get the same AMD EPYC platform and NVMe RAID10 storage, with every figure published as the median of five reproducible runs.

What managed does and does not mean
Here at A Small Orange we manage the operations of the server for you. This means we handle the upgrades, the monitoring, the uptime and the support for you. We don't lock you out of your server. You are still responsible for the applications and the data that you have on the server.

What does Managed include?
On every VPS server of us we include basic monitoring. Next to this monitoring you can select from a long list of extra's, like advanced monitoring, uptime checks, auto-backups, managed OS updates and proactive support.
Is this a fully managed VPS?
This is an unmanaged VPS we offer with optional managed services on top. We can take care of the operations (updates, monitoring etc.) and you still handle your application and your data.
Do I still get root access?
You get to keep your full root access, regardless of whether you add managed services or not. The managed services will simply work alongside your existing access, without replacing it.
How are managed OS updates handled?
OS updates are available on request and are scoped per request, so you decide what gets updated and nothing changes on your server without your agreement.
How do I add managed services?
Order any VPS plan, then enable the managed services you want on the service page. You can adjust them later as your needs change.
Does managed include backups?
You can add backups to your plan, and they're optional. They can be set up to run from every week to every day, and you can keep them for up to 30 days. Backups can be added to your plan along with other services that are managed for you.
