What KVM changes

Four things a container-based VPS cannot give you

OpenVZ, LXC and similar products run every customer on the host's kernel. KVM runs a virtual machine per customer. That single difference is behind everything below.

Your own kernel

You can run your own kernel instead of the one your distribution chose for you. You can load whatever kernel modules you like, and tune whatever sysctl variables you want. You can run WireGuard and nftables without bother, and run Docker without checking at the host level to see if it's enabled there. (On a shared-kernel VPS, this is your provider's decision, not yours.)

Memory that is yours

A KVM guest owns its memory allocation. The node allocation below shows how memory is capped per node and how much of a core you share; it is drawn, not asserted.

Any Linux, or your own ISO

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between KVM and OpenVZ or LXC?
OpenVZ and LXC are containers: every customer runs on the kernel of the host, so kernel modules, kernel versions and some networking features are decided by the provider. KVM is hardware virtualisation: each customer gets a virtual machine with its own kernel, its own modules and full root, and the host only schedules CPU time and memory for it.
Does KVM mean the node is not oversold?
KVM by itself says nothing about that; it is a virtualisation type, not an allocation policy. What we do is described in the node allocation block on this page: Standard and High Memory plans share vCPU on AMD EPYC Milan, capped at one to four shares per node with part of every node kept unsold; Dedicated CPU plans get cores pinned 1:1 that are never time-sliced with another tenant; memory is hard-capped per node in every series.
Can I run Docker, WireGuard or a custom kernel?
Yes. A KVM guest runs its own kernel, so Docker, WireGuard, nftables, custom kernel modules and your own kernel build all work as they would on a physical machine. You can also boot your own ISO.
Which operating systems can I install?
Nineteen images are in the order form: Ubuntu 26.04, 24.04.3 and 22.04.5; Debian 13, 12 and 11; AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and Oracle Linux in versions 10, 9.7 and 8.10; CentOS Stream 10.0 and 9.7; Fedora 44 and 43. A custom ISO is possible as well.
Where are the KVM nodes?
Amsterdam (AMS-IX peering, EU jurisdiction) and New York. The hardware and the plan price are the same in both regions; you pick the region at order time.
Is there a first month for 1 on KVM plans?
Every plan is KVM, and the first month for 1 applies to nine of them: S-2 to S-64 and D-4, D-8 and D-16. It is one per customer, on monthly billing only, and the plan renews at its normal monthly price afterwards.
